Typography Workshop ONE// An Introduction into Type

We will be learning the rules so that we can then go and break them.  Why is print type important? Communication? Mass Communication?
Where are we looking at type today? Historically when was type created? When was the starting point?
The mid 14th centuries is apparently the stating pint for type as we know it.

We will be using Quarkxpress over the sessions.

'cmd 0' Fits the document to the screen, Handy short cut!
'cmd 1' is for actual size

First task! Put you name in, choose a font that represents you, This font doesn't represent me, how can a font represent you? Style? Size? The font I chose is Rockwell.
We then went round the room to look at everyone else's chosen font.
An INCH is 72pt
72pt is the size of the metal the letter SITS ON.
What is type? ITS A SPOKEN WORD MADE VISUAL.

Think about what the font is SAYING.
TYPE is another way of speaking to someone, another way of having a conversation.

Now, how would I like to be seen? What font?
I went for rockwell again  but the curing is slightly different and the pt size is smaller. Also its all lower case.
As a group we decided that 'Friendly' would be lowercase sans serif. Why? Because its subtle and in some ways quite, not loud. A light and regular weight.

What I really really nedd to do is get familiar with type gain! Small Caps, Baseline, Curing etc. Need to have that imprinted in my brain!
