Fower - "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"
Its works alright as a sentence this alphabet. Some letters don't look right though. I think the reason is because graffiti is a lot more flow like and they don't necessary follow a line. '
What is a CRIT? / 5 Questions.

Alphabet Soup- ILLUSTRATOR
BRIEF |
"Produce an alphabet based on one of the letterforms you created from the Alphabet Soup, Visual Thinking brief. You are restricted to using black and one colour and it is to be produced in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, key). Although you are restricted to one colour you experiment with opacity and half tones. You should use your research and experience to date as well as your studio based visual investigations as a starting point. You will use Abobe Illustrator as a tool for visual investigation...." |
Firstly I had to choose a letter from my ten letters (ALPHABET SOUP) that would suit the word stretch the best so in the end I decided to use this one as a starting point.
The layout of my letters also suits the work stretch. I decided to make the interior of the letter blank so the background comes through only leaving a stroke outline (white). This sort of gives the idea of the letter being stretched. I used the font Helvetica Ultra Light and by selecting 'Create Outlines' I was able to customise my letters. Instead of using 6 Glyphs i ended up using 7 just to make the layout work.
ERROR: My only problem, which actually happens to be quite a big problem is I didn't use a colour! Reading the brief properly and thoroughly is something I MUST improve on. This brief was set a while ago and theres no excuse to have a final piece that doesn't fit the brief. Obviously I can change this in two seconds on the computer but I have just finished printing this off and I can no longer use the print rooms down stairs. I also have 27 letter forms just to make the layout more interesting.
It hasn't worked to well but I have tried adding colour in block formation, doesn't work to well and on some blocks you can see they are overlapping other blocks. Theres no reason for my i used red. It just looked nice!

Proverbally Yours // Message and Interpretation
Brief
Produce designs for a set of three HIGH impact posters that deliver a personal identified message derived from your given proverb. A proverb ( From the Latin : Proverbium) is a simple and concrete saying populary known and repeated, which expresses a truth, based on common sense or the practical experience of Humanity.
As a group we each got given ONE Proverb. Mine was "Honestly is the best policy" means that telling the truth should be the first response to answering any question or dilemma. If one lies, then one will wind up having to make up another lie at some point to cover the first one and on and on. Being honest is always the best choice. Because of this I looked in to Honesty coming from the heart. And thats where I got my first idea "Honestly come from the heart". I created the heart on illustrator, using what had learned in Simon's tutorials. I'm stuck between two colours. The red and the baby blue. The blue works much better when thinking about honesty. Its quite a calm colour I can only relate it to heaven and God. Makes sense in the end. The red on the other hand links with the heart and blood and in general I think it looks better. The blue seems too light for the white text. I will continue to play around and create my other two posters
TEXT AND IMAGE
IMAGE.
I decided to simply use my heart illustration for this poster. By using this repetitive sequence I was able to create something suitable. When looking at it I can almost see a roasted chicken..I think I ask around as see what people think.
TEXT
Not sure if this is final. But i began thinking about Honesty being the BEST POLICY. I found a font
called 'Engravers' and decided that it looked the best. It has this quite royal and powerful look. I
organised the type to fit the triangular formation. This gives the idea of the
type to have this royalty and meaning as if this proverb really means something. The 'HONESTY'
Being at the top of the other words that form the triangle. I found it quite hard to not only make this
poster make sense but also make it look good! After adding the text i tried adding this white lines behind
the text. I was going to go with the one with the triangle underneath but there is no image aloud WHAT
SO EVER!

Jack Fower Alphabet Poster
Jack Fower's typeface on A2 Poster. After this was printed we had to then trace over the the letters which took me a good 4 and a bit hours. However I was much happier with the digitalised version. It's much crisper and perfect compared to the hand drawn versions.

Zombie Type// Western Block & Zombie Type Revisitedmu
In all honesty I really don't like theses, They look to rushed. The Light Italic and The Ultra Bolds don't work for me at all. Considering they came from cut outs of other letters its not like I'm supposed to expect the world from theses. To make them a bit fresher I used live trace on Illustrator.

Zombie Type Revisited
MUNCIE |
Engravers MT
I've decided to go in more depth with this task but I don't want to use the letters that I created myself as they are useless because they are weak designs. I scanned the internet and CS to find two fonts of only 1 letter from each that I could use and play with. One with serifs and one without. The 'R' is from the font 'Muncie' and the other 'R' is from 'Engravers MT'. Quite simply I am going to try and merge the two and create a new letter form. I am going to take parts from each and hopefully come up with something interesting. I am tempted to do this with a series of different letters.
Here I have taken the bottom serifs from Engravers and simply added them to Muncie. Already the letter is different visually.
Here we have Geneva CY and Aldine Expanded. Aldine Expanded being the very western font with the huge serifs. I am interested to see how this come out as Aldine Expanded is very big and chunky compared to Geneva CY which is a very simple and skinny font. However I could end up creating something new and interesting that I could take futher. Thats what I like about this task. If something works its very tempting to take it further.
Geneva CY and Aldine Expanded
In conclusion to this I have created a very ugly letter. It doesn't work visually and the edges especially are to sharp when considering that the serifs are ment to be nice and smooth. The main problem is Geneva CY is much to skinny compared to Aldine Expanded. Even though I could use the free transform tool I still had many problems making the overall look of the letter look suitable!
Rockwell Extra Bold & Silom
Apart from my quick custom serifs I made from the bold serifs from Rockwell Extra Bold this works quite nicely. Again not perfect but it was quite easy to do and I am sure if I wanted to take this letter forward I could make it much nicer. Out of the three I have already done I must say that the first example to me is the most positive and the one that works the best. I feel this is because both fonts are very similar, apart from one being serif and one san serif.
Font!
Muncie
Here I decided to make a thicker version of Muncie because the font was too thin to work with on paper. It was a lot easier to follow with the grid also. I then began to add serifs with black pen to make then more apparent.
Finished font
Zombie Type// Naming my Letters
Based on what my letter look like I had to create names for them and then pick one letter that I would expand on. For example the 'Capital King' has conventions of royalty in it and its capital.
My next job is to take the 'R' ( "Western Block Serif") and make an italic version, a utlra light version etc.

Zombie Type// ROUND 2 of 5 Letters Of Each
Here is the 2nd week of our Typography project. During the holiday project were asked to find reference of each letter, 20 of each to be exact. When we turned up to college I didn't think we need to use them but we were told to pick 5 letters, lower and upper case so in total 10 letter. We then had to print each letter out 5 times with the measurements 10x10 - 7cmx7cm - 5cmx5cm - 3cmx3cm and 1cmx1cm
With this huge mound of letter we had to cut bits off from these letters to create new ones. Above I have R,B,M,K and X. These are traces of the final letters that have then been scanned in. During the next session (2) we had to pick a letter and decide what we wanted to call it, I picked R. I chose to call mine Western Block Serif. As half the R was taken from the conventional western type face "PLAYBILL"
The new task is to create a bold, ulter bold, italic etc of my chosen letter.
