It's Your Choice// What am I doing?

PROVERBALLY YOURS // MESSAGE & INTERPRETATION

BRIEF

Produce designs for a set of three high impact posters that deliver a personal identified message derived from your given proverb.

proverb (from Latin: proverbium) is a simple and concrete saying popularly known and repeated, which expresses a truth, based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity

The three posters should work as a set or series and be visually consistent. The first must be produced solely using type, the second solely with image and the third a combination of both type and image.
You are restricted to the use of two colours plus stock.
Background / Considerations

Memorable, immediate high impact and clear.
Challenging, potentially controversial but appropriate and not offensive.
Factual, statistical, informed and specific.
You should use the (visual) language appropriate to one of the chosen papers. You can be bold, subtle, humorous, serious, and satirical.

Mandatory Requirements

Resolutions should be supported by a broad range of visual investigation in the form of design sheets and notebooks.

On going documentation on your blog.
 Deliverables
Posters presented at A2 scale
Each poster should be supported by comprehensive   visual research into frame format, composition and  content.
A photographic image of one of the posters in context.

What are you revisiting?

I have decided I want to re-visit the Pro verbally yours/ Pro-verb poster Brief as I feel I will be able the make a much better job of it this time around.

Why are you revising this?

Looking through my whole blog these have been by far the weakest designs I have done this year and I know that I will be able to create something that works better.

What do you hope to do this time around?

Create something that is much more effective. Looking at what I produced there isn't a a lot going on. If I had to change the brief I would get rid of the colour rule and also the rules on image and type. That makes the brief now very open but I like the idea of this. I want to consider what I will be printing onto also. If they are posters I would like to try out screen priting. Not only that I might have a look into a different pro-verb.

Pro-verbs To Consider
  • No news is good news
  • What the eye doesn’t see, the heart doesn’t grieve over/Honest is the best Policy
  • Ask no questions and hear no lies (
  • Waste not, want not
  • Fight fire with fire
  • Two heads are better than one
  • a stitch in time saves nine (if a little problem is current, sort it out before it gets worse
  • Make hay while the sun shines (do things at the right time
  • Many hands might light work
  • You never miss the water till the well runs dry
  • Never look a gift horse in the mouth (if you get a gift, take it, dont question it to avoid offence)
  • Eagles don't catch flies.

It's Your Choice// Initial Ideas

BRIEF

Select a brief, task, response or product that you have completed as part of the programme and improve on it. What will choose & why? How will you improve it and for what reason?

Review all the work, tasks and workshops that you have been involved in since september and identify an opportunity to revisit something that you wish you had more time to complete, could change the decisions that you made or should have researched / developed more thoroughly. You can only select from briefs that you have completed and not those that are currently under development.
Background / Considerations

What we are asking you to do is simple - that doesn't make it easy.

This brief is offering you the benefit of Hind-sight, a second chance or another attempt. It is a lifeline to revisit and rescue a good idea from a lack of time, a bad decision in an otherwise promising body of work or an opportunity to take an concept / idea / or product further. How will you make the most of this opportunity.

We are not asking you to just re do a brief. Whatever you choose should act as starting point that offers you the chance to develop a substantial exploration of an problem, idea, concept, process. Can you extend your initial ideas into a range of products, a deeper investigation of context / function / format or review your response to a group project.

...........................................................................................................................

Alphabet Soup

Alphabet soup happens to be the first thing I thought of when we were briefed. I'm simply not a big fan of the outcome , however when I had finished it I loved it! It has been a while since this brief and looking back at it it just looks really basic and simple. There nothing interesting about. The first thing I would do it interview someone diffrent. Someone who I might know well so that I already have an idea of what the font will look like. Interviewing someone you don't know is of course interesting but I feel that was the idea when doing 'Alphabet Soup'. It was the beginning of the year and this was a good way of getting to know someone in your group. I would maybe create more than one alphabet. In that case interveiw more than one person. I could go on to interview a series of people and create a font based on them all put together.

Mail Shot

This has to be one of the Briefs I enjoyed the most. The only problem I had with the whole thing was the stock I printed on to! When applying the stickers and then taking them off it would rip the card. The reason why I would want to go back to this is simply because I enjoyed it. This time round I could actually make something that could be sent to people. I could pick a subject that the world or audience can be interested in. I would make it similar to this though. This letter was about Benefit Fraud and thats an area that I'm sure a lot of people are involved in but aren't aware of the consequences.

Communication is a Virus

As a team, we all worked fantastically. This was such an enjoyable brief and we worked so hard on it. I was in a team with Sam Lane, Sam Hoh & Ross Francis. It was something we thought of and almost tried to forget about it as it was quite random but in the end we decided to go with the JuicePurse! And at the end of the day it actually became quite a hit and we started to find the our product on other peoples blogs. If I would come back to this I would fear that I would need the others to join in with me. I would be fantastic to develop with further and make it even more popular with people. From what people have seen of it already they have loved it and that make me think that given half a chance this could become something big.

Proverbially Yours

This was quite an easy brief and looking at it now its a very simple design. I feel this could be pushed much further but how? Do I stick with 'Honesty is the best Policy' or do I try and find something different to work with? There are so many questions that I could ask myself but I think I need to pick a brief to re-viste and crack on with it as I don't have that much time anymore. The ways I could improve this is I could make it more visually pleasing and maybe more helpful! From these posters you don't really understand why honesty is the best policy. I could make a book or something like that explaining why honesty is the best policy.

404 Self Evaluation

1) What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Seeing that a large amount of this module has been very new to me I have learned a lot and I have strongly benefitted from this. For example Hierarchy of type; I found it hard to get my head around as it was something I had never before been introduced to but it has defiantly shaped me into a better designer. It makes me look at any publication differently, trying to see through the eyes of the designer and how they constructed the design. What is a Line I had great fun with as after Amber's first workshop I came out with an idea I could jump straight into and I can't identify and problems I had with this brief. In terms of the skills I learned in process, I had to think more about how imagery or a simple representation says something to the audience when there is only little text.

Zombie type is something I didn't fully commit to and I wish I had done more, it happened to be something I only occasionally visited and I wish I played with it more as I really enjoyed the process of dissecting letters and creating your own. After the first few workshops I found that I wasn't that interested but when I took it onto the computer I started to have fun with the process. I worked with two fonts, one with serifs the other without, and I would simply create a new letter form, some didn't work but some did and I was then inspired to create a new type face from one of my new letters. I also benefitted from Fred's Type lectures and thats why I felt I should blog them.

2) What approaches to/ method of idea generation have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

After a brief I usually get an idea and am comfortable to get straight on a computer and start developing. I like looking at secondary design to enhance my thought process. Of course I don't copy their work but I like looking at certain elements of their work and thinking how I could maybe do something similar. I have mentioned this in an old self evaluation but I am a young designer who doesn't necessarily have a look of my own yet in my work and its something I am excited to discover. Once I feel happy with a certain design I want to go with its then I get working on the computer making sure everything is blogged. My design development is strong and I always make sure that everything I do is blogged.

3) What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/ will you capitalize on these?

From my blog I would say the strongest part of it is my attention to detail and attention to making sure all my work has been documented. I'm not sure how to improve on this but I should defiantly make sure that I am still being this efficient in the future. When I am wrapping up a brief I make sure that everything is in order and everything makes sense to someone wishing to look through. I feel it is important that the process of a design or anything on the blog must be presented clearly.

4) What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I tend to think of an idea an feel happy to get straight on the computer and start designing. Then again thats no excuse for not producing a reasonable amount of design sheets. This is something I have adressed in a few self evaluations and its a dissapointment I haven't seen to it. Again typos are everywhere in my blog and I always find it hard to find them and correct them. My biggest error in this module was my hotdog book but luckily the typo worked with the content. I spelt 'Environment' wrong on the front cover but then decided I preferred this, I didn't but and 'N' in so it spelt enviroment. Seeing that the book was to do with circles it worked. Its amazing how everyone looked at it and didn't see the error. It wasn't until my brother looked at my blog and found it. For any designer I'm sure typos are a big issue but in the future it is crucial to find them and fix them.

5) Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from these things

Design Sheets: Again, I haven't fully committed to design sheets but I feel my work has been strongly documented on my blog so some what covers this up. However, next time I should spend time on design sheet before I work on the computer. I will gain a better understanding of what it is I want to do

Screen Printing: I am keen to start getting into a process of screen printing my work, Its a skill I should get to learn while I have the opportunity at the college. I will gain the skill of being able screen print

Illustrator: I have to say I have actually been using illustrator more but I am still using photoshop to produce my work. I want to get off the pixels and on to the vector. It is important I become familiar with all of the CS. I have a summer plan to teach myself.

Crits: Organise more crits with fellow peers- We didn't have any during the module. I will get good feedback that will improve my work and thought process.

Studio time: I am starting to stay later but I don't have CS at home, I should stay longer, making sure I have a good break at 4 o'clock.

6) How would you grade your self on the following areas:

5= excellent, 4= very good, 3= good, 4= average, 1=poor

ATTENDANCE =                                               5
